Secret Sea no1 (1984/86)
Modified wooden boat, oars, water
245 x 282 x 67cm
I stripped out much of the interior and reduced two sets of rowlocks to one and waterproofed the interior with water-clear fibreglass.
The interior was filled with water and the oars shortened to they could row in this secret sea.
As in Magritte's "The human condition" which shows a painting on an easel standing in a room: the landscape of the depicted painting continuing the view through the window. Or in another version the view exists on the windowpanes and where they are broken the pieces on the floor still contain the landscape. Here too the outside has been shaped by the interior, but we row in a real sea (and The real sea). (See my "Magritte's Window")
